Year 3

Autumn 1

Could you survive the Stone Age?

 

This half term, our topic is a History based one focussing on Early Britons from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. We will be looking at timelines and events from this age.

 

Linking in with this our class book will be ‘Stig of the Dump’ by Clive King which tells the story of a young boy who be-friends Stig who appears to be from the Stone Age. We will be using this book throughout our Guided Reading and English lessons.

 

Science - We are studying ‘Humans and Animals’ this half term. We will learn about the bones in the human skeleton and identify animals who have skeletons.

Art – Art links to our Stone Age theme. We will research cave paintings from this era and then create our own paintings using charcoal.

Music - We will continue to develop our ability to play the recorder. We will improve our understanding of both reading music and playing with a Peripatetic Music Teacher.

PE - We will be learning the core multi skills needed to be a good athlete and improving our gymnastics skills. This will include creating sequences using the body and the use of equipment.

RE - We will develop our understanding of the Christian Faith, specifically Christian beliefs and ways of life.

 

Autumn 2

What do rocks tell us about the way the Earth was formed?

 

Geography - We will be using atlases to locate where some of the world’s most well known volcanoes are found and learning about how volcanoes are created. We will also be finding out about earthquakes: what they are, how they are formed and where in the world they are most common.

Science - In Science, we will be finding out about different rocks, comparing them and grouping them according to their characteristics and finding out about the different rock layers in the structure of the Earth. In addition, we will be finding out about how fossils and soils are formed and the life and contribution to Science of Mary Anning.

DT - We will be designing a collage based on our work on volcanoes.

PSHE - We will be focusing on Keeping Safe and Managing risk - learning more about recognising different types of bullying and what to do if we witness or are being bullied.

Music - We will continue to develop our recorder skills with our Artforms music teacher.

Computing - We will learn to create and debug algorithms, using the Logo programme to move and draw.

RE - We will continue to learn about ‘What Christians believe about a good life’ through bible stories.

PE –we will be developing our dance skills based upon the Jungle Book and our gymnastic skills with a coach.

 

Spring 1

What on Earth!

What evidence of forces is there on Earth?

 

Geography

In geography we will be exploring the features of maps, identifying OS symbols and compass points. We will also use our growing knowledge to help us read and use maps in addition to creating our own.

Science

The focus in Science will be forces and magnets. We will find out about how different materials move on different surfaces, how magnets work and what is meant be the terms attract and repel.

DT

DT this term will support our learning in writing. We will be designing a new dip and dippers for production in Willy Wonkas factory.

PSHE

We will be focusing on emotional well being, strengths and challenges through PSHE and circle time. We will explore how to celebrate achievements and set personal goals, deal with put-downs and deal positively with setbacks.

Music

This term we will be learning a new instrument with our Artforms teacher. Our new instrument is the chime bars.

Computing

We will be learning all about E Safety and how we can use technology responsibly. We will also learn about reporting concerns and inappropriate use.

RE

In RE we will be looking at how different beliefs are expressed through the arts. We will do this through dance, music, art and the exploration of the symbolism of colour.

PE

PE will see us develop our racket and game skills. We will also develop our ability to outwit opponents and become more competent during game play. We will use Benchball, Dodgeball and Rounders to facilitate this.

Spring 2

The Romans

What was it like to be a Roman?

 

History

In History this half term we will be studying the Romans.  We will cover The Celts and their heroic leader Boudica, Roman buildings and roads, famous Emperors and Generals and their efforts to take Britain and what life was like as a Roman Legionary.  We will use our new found knowledge of the Romans to write stories, fact sheets and information leaflets.

Music

In music this half term we will continue to improve our knowledge and ability to play the chime bars.  We will complete the half term with a performance.

Science 

In Science we will be studying light.  We will focus on light and dark, reflection, reflective materials, shadows and sun safety.  We will conduct investigations and experiments to support our learning.

PE

We will continue to improve our hand eye coordination, game play and knowledge of rules and tactics through racket sports and games.

Art

In Art we will be using our knowledge of Roman mosaics, patterns and art to create our own mosaics using appropriate colours and pattern.

Summer 1

Ancient Greece

Who were the Ancient Greeks?

History

In History we will be learning all about the Ancient Greeks.  We will focus on Greek democracy, the Olympics, the battle of Marathon, the Trojan War and Gods and Goddesses.

Music

In Music this term we will be learning to play the Ukulele with our Artforms teacher.  At the end of the summer term we will showcase what we have learned.

Computers

This half term we will develop our knowledge and use of multimedia and processing. This will include using Word and PowerPoint as well as pictures and sound.  We will link our literacy lessons to computing by creating PowerPoints about the Greeks and writing Newspaper articles about content we cover.

Science

We will continue to improve our understanding of light this half term, conducting further experiments and looking at sun safety.  The focus of the lessons will be setting up experiments fairly and writing about our findings.

PE

In PE this half term we will be improving our dance skills by working with a dance teacher.  We will showcase what we learn with a performance at the end of the unit.  We will be outside for our other PE lesson improving our skills in rounders and cricket.

Art

This half term Art will link to our Greek topic.  We will learn about Greek pots and thier design and then draw our own.  Once we have completed our designs based on what we have learned about them we will make them in clay and then paint them.

Summer 2

How did Ancient Greece and the British Isles differ?

 

Geography

 

Music - This half term we will complete Ukulele sessions with a specialist music teacher.  We will use all our knowledge of the different chords to play a popular music track.  We will show off our learning with a showcase for other classes in school.

Computers - This half term we will link our computing work to our Science topic.  We will use programmes on the iPads to create animations of seeds growing in to adult plants.

Science - This half term we will learn about plants, this will include the parts of the plants such as the leaves, stem, roots and flower.  We will enhance our scientific knowledge through experiments that investigate what a plant needs to grow well.

PE

 

DT - In DT we will focus on Ancient Greek buildings.  We will first research Ancient Greek buildings, investigating the groups they were aimed at, the materials used and the shapes and styles popular of the time.  We will then develop designs using this knowledge and create an Ancient Greek building out of Paper Mache.
