Letter from Mrs Harrison 26/06/2020

Friday 26th June 2020

Dear Parents,

I just wanted to touch base with you to let you know our present thinking and theoretical planning. We have not yet received the “Big Plan” that we were promised last week so we are tentatively trying to make plans for the next few weeks that take us up to the end of term. I will be in touch with plans about September once we have had time to unpick the Government guidance and see how it works for us.

In the meantime I am delighted to announce that we have appointed Miss Rhodes as our new Reception Teacher. Miss Rhodes will be coming into school shortly to meet staff for the first time as recruitment has had to be carried out online. Shortly, I will be getting in touch again with parents of children who are due to start in September.

School is ticking along with the children that we have in. The weather continues to be a challenge- from torrential rain to the hottest days in years! As we start to think about September we are really trying to work on how we can ease the transition for your child to the next academic year. We have lots of things to juggle, not least the curriculum teaching that has been missed, safeguarding and statutory assessment. However, we know what will matter to the children most at the moment is having some contact with their classmates, saying goodbye to their teacher from this year and meeting their new one. Government guidance means that we are very limited in what we can do so we are having our best shot! So… we have a plan. It is complicated so bear with us. All the plans below are provisional and subject to change. They are also weather dependent! They all require 2m social distance for all children, staff and parents and must meet our strict risk assessment control measures. We therefore have a plan A and a plan B! For Plan B, your child will be allocated a group in a separate communication.

Please note the following restrictions:

  • The focus on these meetings is for the children to say goodbye to their teacher and hello to their new one and is not the forum for a parents consultation session.(Parents will get the chance as soon as we can arrange it in September).)
  • Group allocations are not changeable as this is a logistical nightmare as it is.
  • You will be contacted in the morning of the event if we are going to Plan B because of poor weather.
  • All social distancing of 2m must be adhered to for adults and children.
  • Key worker children will not require a parent in school for their transition meeting.
  • No other transition visits will be possible.
  • All meetings are subject to cancellation at short notice if there is illness or staff shortage in school. They cannot be rearranged.
  • Class emails will be closed from 17th July. Parents will be able to contact school as usual through the usual address: staff@deightongates.leeds.sch.uk
  • For Plan B – please provide your own hand sanitiser for you and your child. It will need to be applied on entering the building/school grounds.

The invitation to attend a transition session is not an expectation that you must attend. If you would prefer not to or not able to, please let me know by email through the staff account and I will get the teachers to phone your child to chat about next year before we break up. Staff will be in touch with further details next week. We just want children to be able to connect directly in some small way before we break up.

Following my video message to the children last week, I have challenged the staff to send their own messages today. Please look out for them coming through the year group emails! (Mrs Thompson was so keen she has sent hers already!)

..and finally!  In the best news of the week, Miss Ridge’s beautiful baby daughter arrived this week. She is called Neve and was a healthy weight. Mum and Baby and both doing really well and we can’t wait to meet Neve soon.

Take care and have a good weekend,

Best wishes

Claire Harrison
