At Deighton Gates Primary School, we recognise the importance of family time and shared experiences. However, regular school attendance is essential to ensure children achieve their full potential and do not miss valuable learning opportunities.
The law does not grant parents an automatic right to take their child out of school during term time. Headteachers may only authorise leave of absence in exceptional circumstances and each request is considered on an individual basis.
Requests for leave of absence should be made in advance by completing a Leave of Absence Request Form, available from the school office.
Unauthorised absences may be referred to the Local Authority and could result in a penalty notice or other legal action in line with current attendance regulations.
We strongly encourage parents and carers to arrange holidays during the published school holiday periods wherever possible.
Every day in school counts. Good attendance supports children to make the best possible progress academically, socially and emotionally.
Penalty Notices for Unauthorised Absence
Parents should be aware that taking a child out of school during term time without authorisation may result in a penalty notice being issued by the Local Authority. Under current regulations, the first penalty notice is £80 per parent, per child if paid within 21 days, rising to £160 if paid within 28 days. Further unauthorised absences may result in additional penalties or legal action.
