From Flooded to Fun: Help Fix Our Playground!

From Flooded to Fun: Help Fix Our Playground!

We are incredibly fortunate to have a large and exciting outdoor area for our children. Unfortunately, during periods of rain our current drainage system cannot cope. This leads to large areas of our playground flooding, causing disruption to the start and end of the school day, preventing access to classrooms, and meaning this space cannot be used for lessons or playtimes.  Even once the water subsides, the problems continue. We are left with muddy, silty ground that can take weeks to fully recover and limits outdoor learning and play.

We have explored many ways to address the issue, including regular drain maintenance. Sadly, our existing drainage system is simply no longer fit for purpose due to heavier rainfall and surface water runoff. Over the past year, we have worked closely with specialist contractors and Leeds City Council to explore long term solutions. Together, we have developed a plan to significantly reduce flooding and improve drainage across the site.

A Huge Opportunity - With Your Help

We are delighted to share that we have been awarded Sustainable Drainage Solutions (SuDS) funding of up to £25,000.

However, to access this funding we must match fund the same amount - meaning every pound raised could be doubled, unlocking up to £50,000 to improve our playground permanently. Unfortunately, current school budgets cannot cover this contribution - which is why we are reaching out to our community.

How You Can Help

We’ve set up a GoFundMe page to help us reach our target: https://gofund.me/0af98f1c6

  • Donate, if you are able
  • Share with friends, family, and local businesses
  • Introduce us to a company or organisation that may be able to support or sponsor the project
  • Support other fundraising events for our playground.

We have until March 2027 to complete the work, but reaching our target sooner would allow us to carry out the improvements before next winter.

What’s Next?

Although we’re not yet able to share final designs, current recommendations include the installation of soakaways and additional planting to manage surface water naturally.

In February, a specialist team will be carrying out a ground survey to confirm the viability of the plans. We will keep you updated as the project develops.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and for supporting our school.

Every contribution - big or small - brings us closer to a safer, drier playground for our children.
